Oh Happy Day

Some of our household goods were delivered yesterday! Five of the seven crates to be exact. I would assume that the other two crates which house our couch, Monkey’s mattresses, some of my shoes, and hopefully the hardware to assemble the dining room table and bookcase would arrive soon. We were all thrilled to see the television and Hubby and I were ecstatic to find our bed! Monkey’s bed frame arrived, but she could have cared less about that, all she was interested in was what toys were in the shipment. Fortunately, the princess vanity that she’s been asking for was in there, so the day was worthwhile! Another high note, our truck has arrived and we get to go pick it up this afternoon!

Slowly Going Crazy

Monkey and I sit here in our house, snow covers everything, and the temperature is -4 with a high today of 13. Are we going outside? No way! She’s whiny because she has a nasty cough and she wants her toys. I’m on the verge of whiny because I want my stuff. I do feel bad for Monkey, she brought a handful of things in her carry on and we’ve bought her a couple of things at Wal-Mart so she has something to do during the day. We’re really working hard on our alphabet, numbers, and some pre writing skills with flash cards and workbooks bought at Wal-Mart. I usually loathe the big super center, but I actually look forward to our trips, probably because it means I’m getting out of here for a little bit. I’ve read two books in a little over a week, if you knew me you’d know that reading isn’t one of my favorite past times, but I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the two books I read. I now have two more to read. We only have to survive until next Wednesday and our stuff should be here. I can’t wait to sleep in my bed, cook in my pots and pans, eat off my dishes, and get my clothes out of the suitcase on the bottom of the closet floor and into drawers in my dresser! I have mentally laid out Baby K’s and Monkey’s rooms and am doing craft projects in my head to decorate their new living spaces. I was even sad that I had done all of our laundry on Tuesday because it meant I had nothing to do yesterday. I’ve watched more Disney movies in the past three days than I think I’ve seen in my lifetime, although I am most grateful for the portable DVD player. I can’t wait to get my TV, we have cable and a DVR box that taunts me every time I walk into the living room, oh what a joyous day it will be when I can watch Dr. Phil and Reba again! Monkey and I have been listening to iTunes and doing some dancing which helps alleviate some of the boredom, sad as it is, I am so thankful for my computer, iTunes, and Monkey’s love of hair bands and southern rock. I didn’t realize how difficult it would be living without my stuff. I guess that about sums up this rambling post!

Home Sweet Military Home

We are no longer homeless! We got into a house quicker than we anticipated and we love it! It puts the house we left behind in Texas to shame. We have three bedrooms, two and a half baths, a mud room, a garage, a basement, and wonderful kitchen with an electric oven that actually works and lots of cabinet and counter space, a dining room, a laundry room, and a big living room. It has actual siding on the outside instead of cardboard like our old house. We have carpet, real carpet, not industrial grade stuff. It’s wonderful! I can’t wait for our stuff to get here so we can put Monkeys room together, get Baby K’s room started, and in general turn our house into our home!

Greetings from Alaska

Three days in a post hotel, two days in a fabulous hotel connected to one of my favorite stores, and a nine hour flight that had its moments…we have arrived! Alaska welcomed us with frigid temperatures (from the 80’s in Texas to the 20’s here) and snow, it’s beautiful! I’ll admit, it’s going to take a little getting used to, the time change, the temperatures, and the dark/light thing that’s going on, but I think it’s going to be alright.
We ventured out around town today and found some things that are familiar to us and some things that are new and interesting. This town is rustic and I love that. I can’t wait to buy the moose shower curtain that I found in Dallas, then my bathroom will be rustic too!
I have some pictures and I will post them soon…I hope!

Homeless

All of our stuff has been packed up, loaded up, and hauled away for it’s journey to Alaska. Monkey watched as they drove away with it all yesterday, and even though we’ve been talking to her about this move for a while she was still quite upset. She stood at the back door and cried, then she waved and said “Bye bye stuff I’ll see you in Alaska.” When everything was gone and the house was totally empty, we cleaned in preparation for today’s final inspection.
This morning we met the carpet cleaner who was done in about thirty minutes (we only had two small rooms with carpet.) We called the housing office this morning to see about getting our final inspection moved up from this afternoon to this morning, and they were very accommodating. So the woman came about 10:30 and spent all of three minutes in our house. Hubby had been sweating the inspection, as we had both heard some horror stories about it. Then again, the house we lived in was built in the 1950’s and was supposed to be demolished in 2007, but that didn’t happen. We really don’t think they care too much about that housing area. Our house was renovated before we moved in, by renovating it, they added industrial grade carpet and ceiling fans in the bedroom. On our pre move in paperwork it states that our oven was in need of a new ignitor. They never repaired it and only two of the eyes worked even after multiple work orders. Not to mention that there was a huge scorch mark on it. Just my opinion here, but if you’re renovating, would you not put it working appliances? They recently painted the whole neighborhood and my hubby said “You can’t put makeup on a pig.” I’ll say that we are glad to be out of there, even though as of today, we are officially homeless!

Moving on Up??

The last few days have been busy with preparations for our upcoming move. On Friday the moving company came and took some stuff that will get to Alaska about two weeks after we do. We sent things that will come in handy if by that time we have a house. We’ve cleaned out the fridge, taken all of the stuff off the walls, and finally finished packing our suitcases! Today the movers are coming to pack up everything in our house and tomorrow they will be back to put it on the truck and haul it away. We’ve made our hotel reservations, three nights at the post hotel and two nights at a hotel in Dallas. Living out of a suitcase for who knows how long! Isn’t that exciting! Wednesday we’re having our bedroom carpets cleaned and our final housing inspection. Thursday we’ll be on our way to Dallas, stopping at Outdoor World to find adult waterproof gloves, since we’ve been to every store in this town and not one pair to be found. We did succeed in finding a pair for Monkey, at least her little hands won’t get frostbit! Arriving in Alaska in 20 degree weather with no gloves just doesn’t seem like a very good idea. Friday we’ll turn in the truck for shipping, I’m so looking forward to being without a car for a month! And then Saturday, the big day, flying out from Dallas to our new home! We’ve made reservations at the hotel on our new base too so we’ll have a place to stay until we get a house, please pray that we get a house soon and we get one on post! So I guess that’s about it. I’ve been dreading this move for so long, worrying and anticipating every little detail, and now that it’s so close, I’m ready to go and start this new adventure in our lives!

Winter Wear

It’s 86 degrees where I live, and what did Hubby, Monkey, and I do today? We went shopping for winter clothes for our upcoming PCS to Alaska, which is coming up in about a week. I can hardly believe how quickly the date is approaching! Monkey is pretty much set, I shopped for her while we were in Alabama. I found a great store in the brand new mall that had a very knowledgeable person who I’m pretty sure saw dollar signs after we had this conversation:
Nice Salesperson: “Ma’am, can I help you?” (I think I had a dazed look on my face as I looked at all the winter clothing options)
Me: “Yes, we’re moving to Alaska in October and I have no idea what we need.”
Nice Salesperson: “What type of winter clothing do you have now?”
Me: “Well, we live in El Paso and …”
Nice Salesperson: “So, you have nothing.”
Me: “Yeah, that’d be about right.”
Then Nice Salesperson walks Monkey and me all over the store showing us what we will need to survive the frozen tundra. We ended up buying a couple of things. Winter wear is SOOOOO expensive, especially when you have to buy in layers!
Anyway, today we hit a store and found shirts and hoodies for hubby. I couldn’t find anything in that store, so Hubby suggested one of my favorite stores and of course the maternity store since I can’t fit into regular pants anymore. We went to Old Navy and I found a hoodie and a t-shirt. I really liked the t-shirt and I justified buying it because I can wear a long sleeve t-shirt under it, it’s all about layers! Then we went to the maternity store where I purchased a pair of corduroy pants, how I love cords! I wish I could wear them all year! I also got a couple of sweaters. Then, on our way to get a strawberry smoothie, I decided I had to go into American Eagle, I adore American Eagle, a little pricey, yes, but oh, how I love it! I found a sweater and another hoodie, because I think hoodies and cords are the greatest things ever invented! My love of cords and hoodies might make me a prime target for TLC’s What Not to Wear! But really, would that be so bad?
So, we are all set, we have enough winter stuff to get us started in our new state and we’ve even found a store there that will help us find the stuff we need for the coldest parts of the year!
