She’s Too Young

We picked up Monkey from Sunday School today and took her to get a doughnut from the fellowship hall. On our way out she informed Hubby and I that a little boy in her class had kissed her! I asked her what the little boy’s name is and she said “I don’t know.” I asked her where he kissed her, “On the cheek.” I asked her why he kissed her “Because that’s where my boo boo was.” I have no idea what boo boo she is referring too. I think the least she could do would be to know the name of the little preschooler that is kissing on her! Hubby and I had to laugh, it’s just too cute!

Summer Dance Recital

Last night was Monkey’s summer dance recital and the final act of her dance teacher before she has her baby. I debated with Hubby and her teacher about letting her participate since she has a broken collar bone and has to wear a sling, but they both convinced me it was a good idea and deep down I hated to not let her take part since she’s worked hard to learn the dances and was looking forward to it. Her ballet class did a sweet little dance to “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from the Lion King and her tap class danced to Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”. She spent most of her time playing with her colored spot (a colored piece of rubber that tells them where to stand) during the ballet portion, but actually danced when it was time to tap. We were both very proud of her, I’m sure it’s not easy to dance with one arm tied to your side. She tried her best and it was adorable! I’ll post a picture or two later.

One Little Monkey…

At 12:30 last night Hubby and I awoke to the blood curdling screams of Monkey. We both jumped up and ran into her room to find her on the floor. She was shaking and crying uncontrollably. Hubby picked her up and we both tried to calm her down. Finally, after twenty minutes she calmed down enough to tell us what happened. She said that she rolled off the bed and that her shoulder hurt. Hubby looked at her shoulder, mashed around on her arm, and then tried to move it, which was met with much resistance and much screaming. Once she was completely calm we put her back to bed. She was up pretty much until three this morning. At 2:30 she had to go potty, and I took her. She refused to put any weight on her left arm, so I tried to lift her out of the bed, which received more screams. Finally we make it to the bathroom. I put her on the toilet, wait ten minutes, and ask if she is done. She says yes, I say ok, let’s get up, she says no, and I say well, you can’t spend all night on the potty. Finally she agrees to get up, with instructions not to hurt her. She’s now back in bed. Everyone slept until hubby got up for PT at 4:30, once he left I rolled over and went back to sleep. He got home after seven and I started breakfast. Monkey woke up crying so I went to her room. I told her I made french toast she should get up and eat, but she wanted to stay in bed. Then I told her that her daddy wanted to look at her shoulder, to which she replied “Well, he can come in my room.” Hubby went to her room and tried to move her arm, big mistake. We decide we should take her to the emergency room.
Once there, it didn’t take long to get into the triage nurse, who decided that he wouldn’t touch her, after her daddy sent her into fits when he put her on the scale. After that we were taken back to a room. A PA came in and looked at her and had the nerve to try and touch her. She looked him and said “Don’t make me scream.” He said “I just want to look at it, I don’t want you to scream.” He left to order x-rays and then returned to mash on her arm again. A little later the first PA and another PA came in. The new PA asked Monkey to point to where it hurt and she did. Both PA’s looked at her noticing a bruise on her collar bone, so they ordered more x-rays. Then a nurse came in and asked the same questions and then they took her to x-ray. When they took her into the room to do the x-rays, I had to stand outside and I could hear her crying through the door, even though Hubby was in there with her, it almost made me cry. When they let me in she was crying and said “Mommy, help me.” I felt terrible. After a while they took us back to her room and we waited for the news. The nurse came in and told us that her collar bone was broken. They tried to splint it, but the orthopedist didn’t like the way it looked, so they decided to do something else. We were discharged from the ER and sent to orthopedics so she could be fitted for a sling. The nurse fitting her for her sling asked her if she was trying to be a superhero and she said “No, I roll off the bed.” The guy tried not to laugh, and then said “I thought you were safe in your bed.” Hubby laughed and said “She jumps on the bed and the couch and never gets hurt, but she breaks a bone in her sleep.” We’ve given her Tylenol for pain and she took a really good nap. They made an appointment for her for next Tuesday with orthopedics for another set of x-rays. Poor little thing, we both feel so bad for her. She was so brave, when it was all over we stopped and got her chocolate ice cream. We went to the Army hospital and I must say even though we were there four hours, it went must faster than we thought it would and the staff was really good with her.

The Results

We went to the doctor to get the results from Monkey’s ultrasound. When we got there the doctor told me that the results had not been read yet and she would call me with the results, but we did discuss the possible options for treatment. If it was a lymph node we would leave it alone and watch it and if it was something suspicious we would be referred to the surgical clinic to have it removed and tested. We came home and waited anxiously for the phone call. We had been home thirty minutes when she called. The radiologist had done a preliminary reading and said it was just a lymph node. Thank God. There was no breakdown of tissue which would be a sign of infection or a cancer. She told me that he would do an advanced reading later in the week and she would call if there were any changes to the diagnosis, but for now we would just watch it. Again, thank you for your prayers.

Monkey had the ultrasound for the knot in her neck yesterday. She did much better than I thought she’d do. We arrived, checked in, and were told to wait in the lab, so we went out the doors and she said “But, I want to have my picture made.” I explained that we had to wait until they called her name. We sat down and she “read” a couple of books and then it was her turn. The tech took about ten images of the knot with Monkey laying down and sitting up. She did great, held her head back, and was very still. When the tech was done she said we were ready to go, so I go up and got our stuff, but Monkey just sat there. I told her to come on and she said “But, I’m not ready to go yet.” I told her that there were other people that needed to have their pictures taken too, so we had to go. She agreed and we left. She has a follow up with the doctor next Tuesday. We’ll get the results and find out the treatment options. Thank you for your prayers, Hubby and I appreciate them, please keep praying!

Battle: Mealtime

The worst part of my day is dinnertime. This is so sad, it should be wonderful, our little family sitting down, sharing a delicious meal, and talking about our day. But, at my house, I refer to dinnertime as Battle: Mealtime. I cook, I serve, we sit, and then it begins, the whining, the “I don’t like that”, the wiggling in the chair, the “I’m full” when she hasn’t eaten one single bite. My hubby and I have done everything we can think of to get her to eat without the battles, but nothing has worked. She doesn’t eat and then at 9 pm when she should be sleeping, she’s whining that she’s hungry and I feel guilty and try to feed her something light, but filling, and hubby is shaking his head the whole time. I don’t know what to do. I want dinnertime to be a peaceful, wonderful experience that we all enjoy. The way things are going though, I’m ready to give up and eat at the coffee table in front of the TV. Horrible. So, if you have suggestions for me on how to end Battle: Mealtime, I’m eager, I’m listening, I’m willing to try anything!

It’s SOOOOOO Hot!!!

OK, we live on the border of Texas and Mexico. It rarely rains and it starts getting warm in March. My neighbors and I joke that this is the only place where you go from frostbite to sunburns in a two month period of time, oh and don’t forget the 60 mph wind storms that stir up all the dust! Well, in May it was 90 degrees. It’s June, and today it’s 106 degrees. It’s so hot here that it’s hard to breath and guess what??? Our swamp cooler (our a/c) stopped working! Yesterday, it was 104 during the day and at 10:30 last night it was 77 degrees outside and 83 degrees in the house and the swamp cooler was on high. This morning when hubby came in from PT he put in a work order with our community. They came about an hour ago and I don’t know what they did, but now we can feel the cool air! Needless to say, Monkey and I will be spending our day in the house, because it’s just sooooooooo incredibly hot and sticky and miserable!

Wet n Wild

Friday the water park a few minutes outside the town we live in had Freedom Fiesta where all active duty military got in for free, all dependents with ID cards got in for $6, and children got in for $2.50. We decided to go. We packed the cooler with water and snack foods, packed the back pack with sunscreen, towels, and changes of clothes and headed to the park. Normally the admission is $20 a person, so only having to pay $8.50 was a real treat! Monkey was so excited, the night before we went to Target and bought her a Dora life jacket so she could swim in the big pools too. Once we got there we found a spot for our stuff. Monkey was ready to go. She put on her life jacket and picked the first activity, the lazy river. Fine with me, I threatened to spend the whole day floating around on my tube, so relaxing! After that we made our way to the kiddie pool. She did the small slide while hubby jumped off some sort of rope thing in the big pool behind us. Then on to the second kiddie pool where they have added a small water slide complete with pink inter tubes. Hubby took her around to see the kids coming down and she decided she wanted to try, so she got her inner tube and headed up the steps. When she came down she was smiling ear to ear, she threw her arms up in the air and said “That was awesome!” She did that slide seven or eight times. It would be the highlight of the day! On to the big river where Monkey and I swam around while hubby did the water slide. Monkey wanted to try, but alas she was too small. We decided it was time to rehydrate and snack a bit. While getting our water out Monkey took a tumble off the bench headfirst onto the pavement, you can imagine the screams and cries that came after that! I picked her up, wrapped her in a towel, and held her trying to calm her down, the whole time worrying that she had possibly broken her nose or had a concussion or well, you know, all those mommy things we worry about. I wrapped ice from the cooler in the towel and put it on her head and nose. Hubby looked at her and assured me nothing was broken, but she did have a knot at her hairline, a bruised cheek, a swollen and bruised nose, and what looked like road rash on her chin. Hubby is a medic and worked as a paramedic for many years, so I trust his opinion! After a little bit she was ready to go again. We spent another few hours at the park going from pool to pool. We did get to do the lazy river again, going around four times, and I laugh because if we had gone around once more Monkey would have been asleep! We went to the kiddie pool again and then it was time to go. I felt bad because Hubby didn’t get to do some of things he likes to do when we’re out there, but he assured me that all he wanted to do was have fun with his family and he had done that so he was happy. He’s so sweet! Anyway, when we left Monkey cried, all the way to the car which was a bit of a stroll. Two minutes into the car ride home she was asleep and stayed that was until we stopped for gas two minutes from our house! You receive an arm band when you enter the park, Monkey still has hers on, she takes a bath in it and sleeps in it. I’m hopeful that she will eventually let us take it off! We had to promise we’d go back and with the heat the way it is here, we’ll have to!

Worried

Monkey has a bump under her collar bone that has been there since she was about one. I noticed it right before a well baby check-up and brought it up to her then pediatrician who told me it was a lymph node and not to worry, so I didn’t. For the past week she has been complaining that her neck hurts, I assumed that it was her throat, but she has acted fine so I let it go. The bump has been getting bigger and Saturday I noticed it was red and when my hubby or I touched it she would cry. The alarm bells went off and I decided she should be seen and seen soon. I called today to make the appointment and they got her in today, I was surprised that they got her in the same day, but then started thinking that they must think it’s something odd to want to see her so quickly. When we saw the doctor she pressed on it and Monkey was very brave, but the doctor knew that it was hurting her. She told me that yes, it could be a lymph node even though that’s not where lymph nodes usually are, but it moves when touched or it could be a cyst. Ok, neither of those sound too bad. She said it was prudent to get her an ultrasound so that they could image it and make sure it didn’t look suspicious and then because it was growing she gave her an antibiotic to see if that helped to shrink it. I started to worry even more. After that the doctor said that they would probably refer us to the surgical clinic so that they can cut it out. Her ultrasound is the 19th of this month. What if it shows something suspicious? What if the antibiotics don’t help? I can’t help but play the What If game, I know it’s not good to do, but she’s my baby and I am so worried that there’s something terribly wrong. Thanks for letting me get my worries out.

Zoo Adventure

Sea Lion Staring Contest!
My hubby was off work today so we decided to take Monkey to the zoo in the town where we live, they recently opened their Sea Lion exhibit. Monkey was very excited, she loves animals of all kinds. We arrived and went inside. We saw all the animals that the zoo had to offer and then we entered the sea lion exhibit. We watched them for a while through a large window outside and then made our way to the underwater. One sea lion was especially playful. She kept making her way to the glass , opening her mouth in the hopes that someone had a fish, and she even posed for some pictures. Monkey loved it even though she jumped at first when the sea lion came to say hello. We went upstairs to see the pool and watched them from there for a bit. Next came the goats, sheep, and donkeys. As we walked through Monkey started walking very quickly with her hands covering her mouth and nose exclaiming “It stinks in here.” So we went to grab a bite to eat and then went to the Elephant Encounter. We learned a lot about Asian Elephants and got to touch an elephant tooth, Monkey passed on that experience. Then it was on to the gift shop where Monkey looked at everything, finally deciding on a stuffed sea lion and a pink monkey key chain. We went to the educational experience. Monkey got to touch animal furs, lizard skins, and turtle shells. She saw bugs and a guinea pig, she wasn’t too impressed with any of that stuff though. Then back to the sea lions we went. We walked a little more back to the monkeys where my Monkey proceeded to show me and her daddy how the monkey was scratching its head and tummy. Then it was time to go. Monkey had a wonderful time and in the end that’s what it’s all about!
